A Living Book List for Fall
...and the Headless Horseman rides again. This is our fall shelf — real living books, chosen for beauty and staying power, gathered around Washington Irving's Sleepy Hollow and the whole crisp, harvest-scented season it belongs to.
Read them aloud. Read them alone. Read the same ones every October until they feel like family. Not every book will suit every child — take what serves you, and leave the rest.

- The Green Ember — S. D. Smith · rabbits, courage, and a world worth defending; a read-aloud that holds every age
- The Witch of Blackbird Pond — Elizabeth George Speare · colonial New England, suspicion, and courage; a Newbery classic
- Pumpkin Moonshine — Tasha Tudor · a tiny, tender harvest tale from a beloved illustrator
- The Dark Is Rising — Susan Cooper · midwinter gathers its power; begin it as the nights draw in
- Old Wolf — Avi · one hard, beautiful winter's day in the woods, told from every side
